Southampton are moving to sign Burnley winger Manuel Benson ahead of the January transfer window opening on Monday.

The Saints have been in remarkable form of late with Friday’s 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle extending their winning run to four games.

Southampton are now unbeaten in their last 17 Championship games with this run coming off the back of four straight defeats in September.

Russell Martin now has Southampton third in the Championship table and just three points behind second-placed Ipswich Town.

Southampton have a real chance of sneaking into the automatic promotion spots and some extra quality in January could get them over the line…

Southampton move for Burnley winger Manuel Benson

Belgian reporter Sacha Tavolieri now claims on social media that Southampton have made a move to sign Burnley winger Manuel Benson.

Tavolieri claims that talks are now underway with Southampton seeking a loan until the end of the season and an option to buy next summer.

It’s stated that Southampton have already sent an initial offer and are hoping to find an agreement with Burnley very soon.

The January transfer window isn’t even open yet but Southampton are looking to strike early with a deal for Benson.

The 26-year-old was outstanding last season, providing a major goal threat down the right flank with 11 goals in Burnley’s promotion-winning campaign.

Hailed as ‘electric’ by pundit Matt Jarvis, Benson was a menace cutting in on his left foot to score some wonder goals for the Clarets.

Benson has barely featured this season though, playing just 74 minutes across four appearances in the Premier League.

Vincent Kompany brought in a number of wide players over the summer with Nathan Redmon, Mike Tresor, Wilson Odobert, Jacob Bruun Larsen and Luca Koleosho all arriving.

That means Benson has been pushed down the pecking order and he may now look to leave Burnley in the January transfer window.

Southampton are making their move and Benson could be the man to provide more magic in the final third as the Saints chase instant promotion back to the top flight.
