Southampton loanee round-up: Gallagher nets again

It was a mixed weekend of results for Saints’ collection of young loanees.

Sam Gallagher took his Championship tally to two goals after notching in Blackburn’s draw with QPR. The striker, who turns 21 on Thursday, found the net with a looping header to draw Rovers level at Loftus Road and help the beleaguered club to a vital away point. Blackburn remain bottom of the second tier having collected just two points from their opening six fixtures this season.

The situation at Ewood Park would look even worse were it not for Gallagher, however, who also netted in Blackburn’s only other draw this season at home to Burton. The England Under-20 international is certainly getting on better than in his loan spell this time last year, which saw him make 15 appearances without scoring for MK Dons.

Elsewhere, fellow young striker Dominic Gape appeared at the home of Southampton’s great rivals Portsmouth as he made his second appearance for Wycombe.

It was a six-goal thriller at Fratton Park but Gape’s side were on the wrong end of the 4-2 scoreline despite taking the lead. Gape was booked for the Chairboys, who are hovering just above the drop zone having collected five points from their opening seven games.

Defender Jason McCarthy made his eighth appearance for Walsall as they went down 2-0 at Northampton.

McCarthy – who was voted Supporters’ Player of the Year after a successful loan spell at Wycombe last year – has become an ever-present for Walsall but the Saddlers have so far failed to live up to their performances last year which saw them reach the play-offs. Their latest defeat has left them in 20th in League One ahead of a tricky trip to Bristol Rovers on Tuesday evening.

Paulo Gazzaniga

Paulo Gazzaniga was an unused substitute for Rayo Vallecano in their 1-0 win at home to Mallorca in Spain’s second tier. The goalkeeper started on the opening day of the season but has not featured since, instead having to settle for a weekly seat on the bench.
