‘Le God’ did however admit that the Dutchman could be on his way.
Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier has been discussing the future of the club’s star centre-back Virgil van Dijk, as the Dutchman continues to be linked with a move away from the club.
The likes of Everton and Manchester City have been rumoured to have an interest in the former Celtic man – but Le Tissier is hopeful van Dijk will stay until, at least, the end of the season.
Matthew Le Tissier
He told talkSPORT today (19/12/16) that he believed Southampton do not have to sell the player, but at the right price they will do just that:
“Virgil’s signed a new long-term contract so the club don’t have to sell him.
“Obviously if a big bid came in, as has been proved in the past, that means the player might go.
“But I’d like to think we’d at least keep him until the end of the season and finish high up in the Premier League again.”
Le Tissier is correct about his contract situation. Van Dijk signed a long-term extension to remain at Southampton in May of this summer and in that respect Southampton are in a position of power regarding the Dutchman.

However, Southampton are certainly not afraid to cash in on a top talent if a hefty offer lands on their table.
The Southampton star has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season with his uncompromising but modern defensive playing style.
Saints fans will be hoping their club legend is right on this one, as losing van Dijk now could be a big blow for the rest of their campaign.
