Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has praised Angus Gunn following his breakthrough this season just gone and has tipped him for a big future – providing he keeps working hard.

The 23-year-old could hardly have asked for a much trickier debut scenario as he was drafted into the starting XI for the Saints’ trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in early January.

Southampton’s defence had shipped 40 goals in the previous 20 Premier League games and had not kept a clean sheet in the league since the stalemate against Newcastle in October.

Gunn proved very impressive in the game as he made six saves in a crucial 0-0 draw and went on to establish himself as Southampton’s number one goalkeeper for the final third of the season.

All in all, the stopper made 12 Premier League appearances, and 17 in all competitions, throughout the course of the 2018-19 season, keeping five clean sheets in the process according to Transfermarkt.

Gunn’s father, Bryan Gunn, was also a goalkeeper during his professional playing career, winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup and the Scottish League Cup with Aberdeen and making a name for himself as a Norwich City legend as well as winning six caps for Scotland.

“Because of his history, maybe also because of his family, he has the goalkeeper blood in him,” Hasenhuttl told the official Premier League website.

“He deserved to play because he was working hard in the training sessions. If he stays developing his game and if he stays working on his weaknesses, he has a big future as a goalkeeper.”
