The Baggies man left the Saints in the summer and in a recent interview he criticised the St Mary’s Stadium side.

A number of Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to hit back at West Bromwich Albion striker Charlie Austin for his recent criticism of the Saints following his summer exit from St Mary’s Stadium, as reported by Sky Sports News.

The 30-year-old joined the Baggies on transfer deadline day for a reported £4million fee (BBC Sport) after three-and-a-half seasons at the Premier League club, in which he made 81 appearances and scored 20 goals.

In conversation with Sky Sports News, Austin criticised the manner in which the Saints handled his departure, insisting the opportunity for games in pre-season “was taken right out of my hands”.

“Of course I was,” he replied when asked if he felt hurt. “I am 30 years old. I felt like I needed to be treated with respect. It is easy to say the club has got to do this and that and they have got to look after themselves. Then you wonder why players sit back and go ‘this is fine with me, if you are going to treat me like that [then] no problem.”

Following his move, some Saints supporters were happy to see the back of Austin, who had not exactly endeared himself to the fanbase over the summer, as per the general reaction to one of his tweets in July in which he seemingly suggested that he had been frozen out of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans.

Following his interview, a number of Southampton fans had their say on social media:

Austin has made six appearances for West Brom this season, scoring once and registering one assist, according to Transfermarkt.
