A number of Southampton fans have been commenting on Twitter about the Saints’ display in the EFL Cup last night and one of the players who came under some scrutiny was midfielder Oriol Romeu.

The 28-year-old was one of five Southampton players retained by Ralph Hasenhuttl following last Friday’s 9-0 hammering by Leicester but he put in a somewhat lacklustre display in which he weighed in with some sloppy challenges, gave the ball away cheaply and was caught out alongside Jan Bednarek for the Manchester City opener.

Here is some of the social media reaction to Romeu’s display on the night:

Southampton, understandably deployed defensively considering what happened in the last game and the opposition in front of them, held out until the 20th minute, when they were slow to react to a short corner and Nicolas Otamendi rose highest to nod home Bernardo Silva’s cross.

Sergio Aguero made it two on 38 minutes when he was left unmarked and able to steer the ball in from close-range to make it 2-0, and then claimed his second in the 56th minute, poking the ball in from a deflected Mahrez effort to put the result beyond doubt.

The Saints did, however, manage to net a consolation through Jack Stephens’ header from James Ward-Prowse’s corner for a final score of 3-1.
