The Saints midfielder’s time at St Mary’s has come to an end as he returns to his native Netherlands.

A number of Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on the announcement that Jordy Clasie has left St Mary’s Stadium to join AZ Alkmaar, as has been confirmed by the official Saints website.

The Dutch midfielder has joined the two-time Eredivisie champions on a two-year deal, with the option of an additional 12 months, after agreeing personal terms and completing a medical.

Clasie joined Southampton in the summer of 2015 from Feyenoord, under the watch of fellow Dutchman Ronald Koeman, in a reported £8million move.

However, he struggled to make an impact and spent the last two seasons on loan, at Club Brugge in 2017-18 and back at Feyenoord in 2018-19 (Transfermarkt).

With just 49 senior Saints appearances and four goals under his belt in the last four years, it is little surprise that Clasie – whose contract was up this summer – has upped sticks.

Nonetheless, the general reaction to the 28-year-old’s exit by the Saints faithful was bittersweet, with many agreeing it is for the best but feeling sorry it didn’t work out and praising the player’s professionalism.

Here is some of the reaction on social media to Clasie’s time at St Mary’s coming to an end:
