The Saints ace was initially overlooked but is now in the Three Lions camp following some withdrawals.
Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has been called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro.
The 24-year-old joined up with the squad on Monday after Manchester City pair John Stones and Fabian Delph and Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek withdrew due to injury.
Ward-Prowse won his only senior cap for England in March 2017 and was not initially included in the Three Lions for the upcoming games, which prompted a negative reaction from some Saints fans.
Although the England boss was full of praise for the Southampton ace at his press conference last week, he suggested that having “only recently got back into the team” could have been a key reason for his initial omission (England Twitter).
Given the latest update, however, there was a lot of praise for the national side’s decision from some of the Southampton faithful on Twitter, although some did think he shouldn’t have been snubbed from the initial squad:
Ward-Prowse has made 18 Premier League appearances this season and has scored six goals, all of which have come in 2019 (Transfermarkt).
