Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to slam Steven Davis after the Saints ended up taking just one point home with them from Vicarage Road having led 2-0 at one stage on Saturday.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their clash with Watford having not won in the Premier League since late November, but did receive something of a confidence boost last weekend when they beat Fulham to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup.

And it appeared that there may be a chance that the Saints were ready to turn a corner as James Ward-Prowse – who scored the winner at Craven Cottage – bagged a brace in the first-half against Marco Silva’s side.

However, the lead was halved just over 10 minutes into the second-half when Davis failed to clear his lines and was dispossessed as he attempted to dribble out of danger on the edge of his own box, eventually allowing Andre Gray to get the home side back into the game.

Davis had been taken off by the time that Abdoulaye Doucoure scored the equaliser with his hand in the dying minutes. And while the officials took a lot of stick for not spotting the midfielder putting the ball in with his hand, Davis’ performance also attracted a fair amount of criticism.

Many Saints supporters are not convinced that Davis is good enough to play for the side on a regular basis any longer, especially when Mario Lemina is on the bench, and they have urged Pellegrino to stop relying on the Northern Irishman so much in future.
