Southampton have announced that Jake Hesketh has joined League Two side MK Dons on loan for the rest of the season.

The 22-year-old returned to St Mary’s earlier this month after spending the first half of the season at Burton Albion.

Hesketh enjoyed a fruitful spell at the League One club, scoring three goals in 23 appearances (Transfermarkt) including the winner in the Carabao Cup quarter-final triumph over Middlesbrough.

Now, the highly rated player has joined promotion-chasing MK, who are managed by ex-Southampton ace Paul Tisdale and also have former Saint Danny Butterfield on their coaching staff.

The Buckinghamshire team is currently sixth in League Two and appearing on course for a playoff spot, while also being just three points off the automatic promotion places with a game in hand.

After the Saints announced the move, some fans took to Twitter to give their thoughts, with the general message appearing to be confusion as to why he has dropped down a division from Burton:

Hesketh has played in the Premier League for Southampton, having made two appearances in the 2014-15 season, and has also turned out in the Europa League for the south coast club.
