Southampton ended the weekend in the relegation zone in the Premier League after suffering a 2-0 defeat.

Southampton fans have been reacting on Twitter after watching Wesley Hoedt’s latest performance for Mauricio Pellegrino’s men, and it appears that many would not mind seeing the summer signing dropped for the next game.
The Saints would have gone into Sunday buoyed by their previous result, which had seen the side take themselves out of the bottom three by beating West Brom at The Hawthorns. However, by the time they kicked off against Liverpool, they were back in the relegation zone after wins for Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town earlier in the day.

And it took just six minutes for the situation to get slightly worse for Southampton, and Hoedt was at the centre of it. A long ball cleared forward should not have been too difficult for the former Lazio man to cut out, but he managed to make a mess of the attempt and Mohamed Salah capitalised to play in Roberto Firmino for the opening goal.
Salah would make the score 2-0 just before the break as the Reds carved the defence open once again – and that was how the scoreline would remain throughout the second-half to ensure that Liverpool took the three points back with them.

After the game, a number of Southampton fans were critical of Hoedt on social media. The defender was signed for £15 million in the summer (via Guardian) and he has arguably not been a bad addition, but the supporters are yet to be convinced that he is going to be able to fill the void that Virgil van Dijk has since left behind.
Some Saints fans have suggested to Pellegrino that Maya Yoshida should come back into the side for the FA Cup clash with West Brom this weekend.
Here is what the Southampton supporters made of Hoedt’s display…
