Southampton have announced that defender Wesley Hoedt has joined Spanish club Celta Vigo on loan for the remainder of the season.

The Netherlands defender has made 13 appearances for Saints this season, but they all came under former manager Mark Hughes.

Since Ralph Hasenhuttl took the reins at the Premier League club, Hoedt has not featured once, and last turned out in the first team in late November.

Southampton confirmed in a statement on their official website that the La Liga strugglers have the option to buy Hoedt when his loan expires in the summer.

Hoedt becomes Celta’s second loanee from St Mary’s, as he will join up with former teammate Sofiane Boufal, currently on a season-long deal at the Balaidos.

The Dutchman joined Saints in a £15m deal in the summer of 2017 from Italian side Lazio when Mauricio Pellegrino was in charge but leaves 18 months into his five-year contract.
