Southampton fans react to Under-23s winning 7-0 in Premier League Cup

Some Saints supporters called on members of the reserve side to be drafted into the senior squad against Manchester United after winning at Notts County.

After Southampton successfully survived relegation from the Premier League last term, many fans would have been hoping for better performances and results this time round.

Instead, Saints have only claimed one league win all season, a 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace on 1 September.

Mark Hughes’s charges have fallen to some heavy defeats along the way, such as 3-0 losses to Liverpool and Chelsea plus a 6-1 thrashing by Manchester City.

Last weekend, Southampton slipped into the bottom three of the table following a shock 3-2 loss away to bottom side Fulham, and a fixture against Manchester United is up next.

In addition, they’re now also out of the League Cup following a defeat on penalties at Leicester City in their rescheduled game, which took place earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Southampton’s Under-23s are faring better than their senior counterparts, sitting top of their Premier League Cup group after two wins and a draw.

On Wednesday, they followed up their 2-1 win over Leeds United and 1-1 draw with Newcastle United by recording a comprehensive 7-0 win over Notts County.

Will Smallbone and Tyreke Johnson both claimed hat-tricks after Harry Hamblin opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, the Saints 4-0 up at Ilkeston by half time.
