Shane Long came off the bench to score a brace for Southampton against Leicester City, so what did Saints fans think of his performance?
Southampton’s fine start to the season shows no signs of stopping. Even when the likes of Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane are having an off-day, Ronald Koeman can call on a substitute to do the business.
Shane Long was brought off the Saints’ bench with just 22 minutes of normal-time to play on Saturday and with the scores level. But that was more than enough time for the former Hull City player to net a brace, scoring his first league goals of the season having previously failed to hit the net in nine appearances.
Against Leicester it was a different story, with the Republic of Ireland international having a 100 per cent shooting accuracy, finding the target with all three of his efforts and the back of the net with two of them.
| Goals | Shots | Shots on Target | On Target Shooting Accuracy | Key Passes | Passing Accuracy | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shane Long | 2 | 3 | 3 | 100% | 0 | 50% | 22 |
The result means Southampton now have a remarkable 25 points from 11 league games this season and they remain just four points behind undefeated league leaders Chelsea.
With Pelle previously on fire, the Italian international will now be looking over his shoulder knowing Southampton have some effective alternative options should the goals dry up.
