Southampton lost 1-0 at Cardiff City on Saturday afternoon.

Southampton were hoping for an immediate boost after appointing Ralph Hasenhuttl as their new manager, but they endured a torrid Saturday afternoon in South Wales.
Hasenhuttl came in as a replacement for Mark Hughes last week, and headed to Cardiff City for his first game in charge, having been in the stands for the 3-1 midweek defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Austrian was hoping to kick off his reign with a vital win over Cardiff, but he saw his side go down to a 1-0 defeat in a relegation six-pointer.
Southampton looked to be closing in on at least a point, but ended up going home empty-handed as Jannik Vestergaard miscued a backpass from Victor Camarasa’s through ball, and Callum Paterson ran on to score.
Hasenhuttl now has to pick his players up ahead of Sunday’s game against Arsenal, but Saints fans are unlikely to want to see Vestergaard feature in that match.

The giant Dane, a major summer signing from Borussia Monchengladbach, as handed a start by Hasenhuttl, who will be well aware of his ability from his time in Germany.
However, his critical error left fans on Twitter fuming, branding him an ‘absolute donkey’ and a ‘waste’ after spending so much on him, adding that he is ‘terrible’ and shouldn’t even play for Southampton again after such a poor performance.
