Southampton and Brentford played out a 2-2 draw this weekend but how did the Saints’ new defender get on?

Southampton and Brentford went head-to-head this weekend in a pre-season friendly, with the match ending all square.

The home side took the lead courtesy of a 40th-minute strike from Lasse Vibe but the Saints equalised through Charlie Austin and the prolific front-man made it two after fine work from Sam McQueen.

Southampton would have hoped to see out the victory from there but Brentford had other ideas, with Josh Clarke’s cross causing all sorts of problems and beating Fraser Forster to level the scores with time running out.

For those Southampton fans in attendance, they would have been paying particularly close attention to new addition Jan Bednarek.

The 21-year-old arrived at St. Mary’s from Lech Poznan for £5million (as reported by the BBC) and Southampton supporters will have been hoping to watch another hidden gem in action.

As it was, the Polish defender did not exactly set pulses racing, although it is extremely early and he was always going to need time to settle in his new surroundings.

Bednarek played the first half before being replaced by Jack Stephens and Southampton’s defence was considered to look more solid once the changes took place at the interval.
