Southampton fans have slammed Steven Davis on Twitter after his performance in the Saints’ miserable night which saw former boss Claude Puel lead new side Leicester City to an emphatic win.

Puel endured a mixed spell during his one year at St Mary’s. Leicester stormed to a 4-1 win, going into the break 3-0 ahead. And while few of the Southampton players emerged from the game with any credit, there was particular criticism directed in Davis’ direction.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was fantastic at the weekend at Arsenal and yet Mauricio Pellegrino decided to leave him on the bench and bring Davis back in, and the Northern Irishman generally struggled to make any sort of impact on the game.

Davis has been an excellent servant during his time on the south coast, but a number of supporters have started to question whether the midfielder – who turns 33 next month – should really have a prominent role in the side any longer.
