Southampton fans have heaping praise on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on Twitter after the midfielder played a starring role as the Saints came desperately close to shocking Arsenal on Sunday.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men had not won either of their previous two games and they were facing a Gunners side that had scored 12 goals in their previous three games in all competitions – and that number would have been even greater had it not been David De Gea’s stunning display last week.

It was the Saints who made the brilliant start however, as Charlie Austin took advantage of some lacklustre defending to break the deadlock inside the first three minutes at St Mary’s.

It was not a particularly impressive performance from the visitors, and they had to wait until the 88th minute for their equaliser as Olivier Giroud headed home to deny Southampton a victory.

The performance from Pellegrino’s men left many fans delighted, and it was the display of Hojbjerg that seemed to attract the most praise on social media.

The former Bayern Munich man has had to bide his time since his £12.8 million move last summer, but his recent run in the team has been extremely impressive and is giving Pellegrino plenty to ponder with the options available to him.
