Southampton now find themselves three points above the Premier League’s bottom three after a narrow defeat.

Southampton fans have been reacting on Twitter after Mauricio Pellegrino’s side were narrowly beaten by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge – and the reaction to Maya Yoshida’s performance has certainly been mixed.

The Saints managed to keep the Blues at bay until stoppage-time at the end of the first-half when Yoshida gave away a free-kick. And Chelsea made sure to punish the visitors as Marcos Alonso curled the ball around the wall and into the far corner, leaving Fraser Forster unable to scramble across his line in time to keep the ball out.

Despite Southampton’s performance being considerably better than the one the fans had to sit through in midweek when Claude Puel’s Leicester came away from St Mary’s with a 4-1 win, it has left the south coast club slightly closer to the bottom three in the top flight.

The Saints are now without a win in five – losing three of those games – and now find themselves just three points clear of the relegation zone after both Crystal Palace and West Ham won on Saturday.

Interestingly, the reaction to Yoshida’s display at Stamford Bridge was mixed. Some felt that the Japanese centre-back was possibly the away side’s man of the match, while others were not so happy.

Some of the supporters felt that the defender cost the team by committing the foul that led to Alonso’s goal, and they do not believe that he is good enough to be a regular in a Premier League side, especially with Virgil van Dijk left on the bench.
