Jan Bednarek made just his second appearance for Southampton in their FA Cup third round win.

Southampton fans have been reacting on Twitter after watching Jan Bednarek’s performance against Fulham – and to say that the fans were divided in their assessments of the Pole’s display would probably be an understatement.
Bednarek has endured a difficult time since arriving on the south coast for £5 million in the summer (via BBC Sport). Before the trip to Craven Cottage, the 21-year-old had played just once for the Saints, and that came back in August when Wolves won 2-0 at St Mary’s in the Carabao Cup.

It probably did not surprise many supporters therefore, when Mauricio Pellegrino selected the youngster for the game against the Cottagers in the third round of the FA Cup. Though it may have caught supporters off-guard when he was picked at right-back, with Jack Stephens joining Maya Yoshida at centre-back.
After a terrible spell in the Premier League – Southampton have not won since November in the league and find themselves only outside of the bottom three on goal difference – their trip to the capital provided some respite as James Ward-Prowse scored what proved to the contest’s only goal to ensure that the Saints will be in the hat for the fourth round.

Despite helping the side keep a clean sheet and doing it whilst playing out of position, Bednarek’s performance attracted a mixed response on social media.
The Poland international was praised by some supporters, but many felt that he offered very little during the game and they are not convinced that he will be good enough to play an important for the club in the future.
Here is the best of the reaction…
