Southampton were beaten 4-2 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, missing the chance to move within one point of eighth in the Premier League.

Southampton fans have been reacting on Twitter following the side’s defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and while most of the side received praise for their performances, the majority of the defence came in for plenty of criticism.
The Saints would have been able to move to within one point of eighth place West Brom – with a game in hand – had they pulled off an unlikely victory away against the current league leaders.
But they got off to the worst possible start with Eden Hazard giving the home side a fifth minute lead. However, Oriol Romeu equalised soon after before Gary Cahill put the Blues back in front and Diego Costa made the game safe with two second-half goals.
Ryan Bertrand’s smart header gave the scoreline some more respectability, but it came too late to be considered a genuine lifeline for Claude Puel’s men.

The fans took little time to start discussing the defeat on social media, and there was actually a fair amount of positivity following some extremely bright moments, but not every player received praise from the supporters.
Fraser Forster was criticised once again, while the centre-back pairing of Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida left fans comparing them to a Sunday League duo while there were also calls for Martin Caceres to come in.
