Southampton midfielder Jordy Clasie has left St Mary’s to join Club Brugge on a season-long loan.
Southampton fans have been reacting on Twitter to the news that the club have confirmed on their official website that Jordy Clasie has left the Saints to join Club Brugge on a season-long loan.
Clasie moved to the Premier League in 2015, linking up with former Feyenoord boss Ronald Koeman. But despite featuring fairly prominently during his first year at St Mary’s, the 26-year-old was unable to replicate the form that he had previously shown in the Netherlands.
No goals or assists came in his first year in the top flight, and under Claude Puel last term, he made just 12 league starts, featuring a further four times from the bench.
There were, of course, some high points along the way – most notably, his stunning finish in the EFL Cup victory over Arsenal at the Emirates which helped the Saints on their way to the final.
Unfortunately however, the news of his departure has been met with little criticism from the majority of the fans who have taken to social media.
There appears to be an acceptance that Clasie has not shown enough since arriving in England to justify being high up Mauricio Pellegrino’s pecking order – though some have argued that the Netherlands international has not been given enough of a chance to showcase his full ability either – and a loan move may be the best move for all parties.
But despite there being a feeling of acceptance amongst the supporters – with one even suggesting that he should have been sold permanently – there also appears to be a desire to see Clasie return next summer and fight for his place once again.
