The Portugal ace’s loan deal comes with an option to buy but some Saints fans are getting worried about seeing the squad getting smaller and smaller.

Southampton have confirmed on their official website that Cedric Soares has completed his loan switch to Serie A side Inter Milan until the end of the season.

The Portugal international and Euro 2016 winner has joined the Italian side with a view to a permanent switch in the summer, which BBC Sport reports would cost the Nerazzurri £9.5million.

Soares joined Southampton from Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon in 2015 and made 119 appearances for the south coast club in his three-and-a-half years at St Mary’s, as written on the official Saints site.

Inter’s decision to move for the right-back was, according to BBC Sport, prompted by their injury concerns over Sime Vrsaljko, who is on loan from Atletico Madrid, and they reportedly considered alternatives including Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian.

As well as confirming Soares’ departure, the Saints statement suggested that manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will draft in an academy player in his place, noting the emergence of Yan Valery and Kayne Ramsay since the Austrian’s arrival at the club.
