Southampton were linked with a potential move for Roger Schmidt with Claude Puel’s future up in the air.

Southampton fans have been expressing plenty of disappointment on Twitter after Roger Schmidt was appointed the new manager of Chinese Super League side Beijing Guoan.
The Saints do, of course, have a manager in place currently, but the Telegraph reported earlier this month that Claude Puel’s future was very much up in the air, and it would not be a major surprise if a change was made this summer.

Despite the Frenchman guiding Southampton to the EFL Cup final – a final which saw them put up a brilliant fight against Manchester United – and a top-half finish in the Premier League, he has lost plenty of support throughout the campaign.
The Telegraph reported that Schmidt was one of the names under consideration if they did indeed decide to make a change, along with Thomas Tuchel, formerly of Borussia Dortmund.
Thomas Tuchel is in the frame
Schmidt had enjoyed a promising spell with Bayer Leverkusen before his departure earlier this year, and boasts an impressive win rate from all of his previous clubs. However, the Saints have missed the chance to make a move with the 50-year-old heading to China.
The news has been met with plenty of disappointment on Twitter, but the appointment has also led some of the Saints fans to urge the club to now go out and get Tuchel before he heads elsewhere also.

Here is the best of the reaction…
