Some Southampton fans reacting on social media have shared their disappointment after the Saints sold Alex Jankewitz to Swiss side BSC Young Boys for an undisclosed fee.
The 19-year-old spent three years on the south coast after joining Southampton’s academy from Servette in 2018. He featured intermittently in the Saints’ U18s during his first season, before stepping up to the B-team in early 2019.
Consistent minutes followed in the reserve squad, but senior action proved out of reach. Ralph Hasenhuttl handed Jankewitz his first-team debut as a substitute as Southampton beat Shrewsbury in the FA Cup in January.

He followed his five minutes with a minute against Aston Villa on his Premier League bow 11 days later. But Janekwitz’s third and final senior Southampton outing lasted two minutes when shown a red card on his first start against Manchester United in the 9-0 loss.
Janekwitz’s Old Trafford horror show came less than a week after The Athletic reported the midfielder had told Southampton he wanted to leave. The highly-rated teen was frustrated over his lack of progression into the senior squad and felt chances would come elsewhere.
But the Saints blocked the Swiss U21 international from leaving in the winter following talks with his agent. Now, though, Southampton have decided to sanction a deal for Jankewitz to join BSC Young Boys, where he will hope to forge his name in the senior game.

However, some Southampton fans on social media have shared their disappointment at the Saints selling Jankewitz to BSC Young Boys. That’s because they believe their club have sold a very promising player in the 19-year-old, and will live to regret his exit.
Southampton blocked Jankewitz leaving in the winter as they considered him to be one of their most highly-rated youngsters, per The Athletic. He was also viewed very much as a player for the future, but – clearly – their views were no longer aligned.
