Southampton find themselves in a desperate position in the Premier League after an agonising defeat on Tuesday night.

On a hugely disappointing night for Southampton, their supporters would be forgiven for struggling to find a positive following their 2-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace on Tuesday – but the performance of Jeremy Pied has given some of the supporters who have taken to Twitter after the game a small reason to be optimistic.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men are currently enduring an absolutely miserable run of form in the Premier League, having not won since the end of November – but it appeared that the Saints may be on their way to ending that run as Shane Long scored for the first time since February to put the home side in front.

However, the second-half saw the Eagles turn the game on its head. James McArthur equalised with just over 20 minutes to go, before Luka Milivojevic made up for missing a penalty in the dying minutes of their clash with Manchester City at the weekend with a brilliant effort from outside the box into the bottom corner.
Unsurprisingly, the final whistle was met with a significant amount of boos from the Southampton fans inside St Mary’s, and Pellegrino’s men are just one place above the relegation zone in the top flight, with only goal difference keeping them above Stoke City in the table.

There was plenty of anger on social media after the game – which sees their winless run extend to nine matches – but one player who received praise was Pied.
The right-back has barely featured since arriving last summer – the defeat saw him make only his sixth league appearance for the Saints – but he provided the assist for Long’s goal and his overall display saw him receive some praise.
Here is the best of the reaction…
