James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond have received their first England call-ups.
England’s Adam Lallana
Southampton fans were left revelling yesterday in the success of two of their players. Both Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse have been called up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate.
Southgate knows the pair well from his time as England under-21 manager and is now trusting them to be as successful with the England senior team.
But whilst many Southampton fans are excited, international recognition has been seen as something of a curse before.
Southampton first saw their players getting called up to the England team after good form under Mauricio Pochettino. Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Rickie Lambert and Nathaniel Clyne were all soon playing for England.
Rickie Lambert for England
Not long after that, they’d moved on. Lallana, Lambert and Clyne all headed to Liverpool whilst Shaw became the world’s most expensive teenager when he joined Manchester United.
Then there is the case of Jay Rodriguez. Still at Southampton, it was not long after he received an England call-up he suffered a knee injury that has curtailed his career.
Whilst Southampton fans will be pleased to see the duo getting international recognition they will be hoping the curse of the England call-up does not strike again for Southampton.
