The Saints let Forster leave St Mary’s Stadium this summer for a loan stint at Parkhead, having left the Hoops to join Southampton permanently five years ago.

Fraser Forster of Celtic arrives ahead of the Scottish Premier League match between Hibernian and Celtic at Easter Road on 28 September, 2019 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Following Fraser Forster’s world-class save for Celtic in their Europa League clash last night, a number of Southampton fans have been commenting on Twitter about the Saints loanee’s display for the Hoops.

Forster has been on Southampton’s books since the summer of 2014, when he left Parkhead for St Mary’s Stadium in a £11.3million deal (Transfemarkt), and has made 125 appearances for the Saints, but fell out of favour under both Mark Hughes and then Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The 31-year-old made just one first-team appearance for Southampton last season, the penultimate game of the 2018-19 Premier League campaign against West Ham, in which he conceded three goals, and his last senior appearance prior to that was on Boxing Day 2017, when the Saints were beaten 5-1 by Tottenham.

However, Forster’s loan switch back to Celtic has proven a new lease of life for his career, with 10 appearances already for Neil Lennon’s side, and in last night’s European clash with Lazio, he pulled off a simply sensational save moments before to final whistle to preserve the Hoops’ lead, keeping out a ferocious long-range rocket.

Here is what Southampton fans have been saying on social media:

Forster spent two seasons on loan at Parkhead before joining on a permanent deal for £2million from Newcastle United in 2012 and made 197 appearances for the Hoops prior to the Southampton switch, as well as winning the first of his six England caps (BBC Sport).

According to The Daily Echo, neither of the loan deals for Forster or Mohamed Elyounoussi include an option to buy.
