Southampton drew 2-2 with Brighton on Monday night.
Southampton manager Mark Hughes will have been desperately frustrated that his side failed to convert a 2-0 lead on 65 minutes into three points, as they drew 2-2 with Brighton – and some Saints fans have blasted Jannik Vestergaard.
Hughes’ side took the lead with their first first-half goal of the Premier League season, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg rammed home a 30-yard pile driver into the bottom corner.
Danny Ings’ excellent footwork in the second half saw him twist and turn past the Brighton defence before being brought down by left-back Gaetan Bong in the penalty area. He stepped up to score his third league goal of the season.
But Brighton replied instantly. Vestergaard, 26, was caught under the flight of Brighton centre-backs Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy from a free-kick, and Duffy headed home to reduce the arrears.
Southampton looked to hold on until the end, but target man Glenn Murray had other ideas. The veteran striker had tormented Vestergaard all evening, and he coolly slotted home a penalty after James Ward-Prowse fouled Duffy.
Saints fans were understandably seething on Twitter, and plenty of their frustration was centred around 6ft 7in Vestergaard. An £18million signing (Daily Post) from Gladbach, fans were shocked that he was beaten in the air so easily.
