Should Southampton consider a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Tom Carroll?

Spurs midfielder Tom Carroll has made just one Premier League appearance this season – as a one minute substitute, and it is doubtful whether Mauricio Pochettino sees him as part of his long-term plans.

The 24-year-old has fallen down the central midfield pecking order at White Hart Lane, even more so since the emergence of 20-year-old Harry Winks.

Carroll is now at the age where he really should be playing regular football, and if he is to realise his full potential, he must look for a move away from north London in January – if his situation has not changed by then.

Could Southampton be the perfect destination for Carroll?

Since Claude Puel arrived at St Mary’s in the summer, he has injected his ideas and philosophies into his Saints side, and has them playing attractive, free-flowing football.

Carroll, wit his ability on the ball, intelligent movement, and wonderful range of passing, would slot in perfectly to the Southampton side.

Although Puel already has a plethora of midfield options, it is arguable that he does not possess a player with the skill set of Carroll, with most of his options being of a more defence minded disposition.

Southampton are still in the Europa League and the EFL Cup, along with their weekly participation in the Premier League and will enter the FA Cup draw in January, so it will be absolutely vital for them to have enough quality numbers amongst their ranks as they head into the latter stages of the season.

The purchase of Carroll from Spurs would be the ideal place to start, and if a move came to fruition, it would be one that would seemingly suit all parties concerned.
