Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Southampton boss Claude Puel highlighted the importance of Oriol Romeu to the way in which he wants his side to operate, as quoted by the club’s official website.
The Saints have been on a sparkling run of form of late, and have picked up 14 points from their last six Premier League outings.
The 25-year-old Spaniard has been a key component during that impressive run, and his discipline in sitting in front of the back four allows Southampton’s more attack-minded players more freedom with which to express themselves.

Puel spoke to reporters ahead of his side’s game against Chelsea tomorrow, and explained how Romeu’s influence on the Saints side is of vital importance, as quoted by southamptonfc.com:
“To play in this position, it’s important the player can have a good ability to work the ball and to change and to switch it wide while anticipating the situation. It is important for this player to be a good technical player, to not lose the ball and to start the action with quality. Tough tackling is the first quality of the player in this position. But in this position it is important to protect the defence. That is the role of Oriol with us.”

Tomorrow’s visit from Chelsea will certainly present the Saints with a stern challenge, with the Blues currently in the midst of a fine run of form themselves, despite Wednesday’s loss to West Ham United in the EFL Cup.
The game kicks off tomorrow at 16:00 and can be seen live on Sky Sports 1.
