Southampton wanted Sam Byram back in 2014 long before his switch to West Ham United.
According to the Daily Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Southampton defender Cedric Soares this summer, and the Saints are desperately hoping that they will be able to tempt the Portuguese into staying.
Should, for whatever reason, the south coast club feel resigned to losing him, perhaps they should consider making a move for a player who was on their radar back in 2014.

Sky Sports reported back in August of that year that Leeds had rejected a bid from Southampton for their academy starlet Sam Byram – who would go on to join West Ham in 2016.
Byram’s spell in the Premier League has not been the best one, with the right-back only showing occasional glimpses of the quality that made him one of the brightest prospects to come out of Leeds’ academy in recent years.
But perhaps the Saints should consider making a bid in the hope that Pablo Zabaleta’s arrival at the London Stadium leaves the Hammers open to offers for the 23-year-old.
Mauricio Pellegrino would undoubtedly need to strengthen his options on the right-hand side of the defence if Cedric does end up moving on this summer, so perhaps handing Byram the chance to make a fresh start would be worth considering if he feels that he can turn those glimpses of quality into much more regular occurrences.
