Southampton should be looking to get the best out of Mohamed Elyounoussi.
Southampton are calling on Ralph Hasenhuttl to save their season, having appointed the Austrian as a replacement for Mark Hughes last week.
The Saints sacked Hughes last week and immediately brought in Hasenhuttl, but he started his reign with a disappointing 1-0 defeat away at Cardiff City on Saturday.
The former RB Leipzig boss must attempt to lift his players for the game against Arsenal this weekend, and try to rejuvenate some underperforming Saints players.
One player that fans may have expected a little more from is winger Mohamed Elyounoussi, who was signed by Hughes in a £16million raid on Basel over the summer (Sky Sports).
The Norwegian arrived with a big price tag and big expectations, having hit 13 goals and 17 assists for Basel last season, yet this term he hasn’t registered anything in either category.
Hughes was getting nothing from the wide man, certainly nothing like the level he was playing at with Basel, and it’s imperative that Hasenhuttl works to get the best out of Elyounoussi.
Playing in a more expansive system should suit Elyounoussi, and having seen the likes of Emil Forsberg, Marcel Sabitzer, Bruma and even Pascal Gross thrive under Hasenhuttl, Elyounoussi should be the latest creative talent to flourish with the Austrian’s tutelage.
Southampton’s attacking play is one of their biggest problems, and kickstarting Elyounoussi alongside Stuart Armstrong and Nathan Redmond could be key to their survival in the Premier League.
