Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closing in on Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.
According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are closing on the £2million signing of Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga in a shock move.
Spurs are the only Premier League team yet to make a signing since the end of last season, but Mauricio Pochettino may finally be closing in on a new addition ahead of the Premier League season.
Whilst Pochettino has two experience goalkeepers in Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm, the departure of Luke McGee to Portsmouth and the end of Pau Lopez’s loan deal mean that Pochettino has been eyeing up a third-choice goalkeeper.
Now, The Sun claim that Tottenham are set to sign Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, in a surprise deal that will reportedly cost just £2million.
Gazzaniga, 25, joined the Saints from Gillingham in 2012, and made just 23 appearances for the club before being loaned out to Spanish side Rayo Vallecano for the duration of last season.
Now back at Southampton, Gazzaniga – who hails from Pochettino’s hometown of Murphy in Santa Fe, Argentina and even worked with the Spurs boss at Southampton – is surplus to requirements, and looks set for a shock reunion with his former manager in North London, sparking reaction from both sets of fans.
Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to share their shock that Gazzaniga will be joining a Champions League side, having struggled for first-team football at St. Mary’s Stadium, though others do think that he should be given a real chance to challenge Fraser Forster in goal.
Tottenham supporters, who have been starved of signings all summer, aren’t too impressed with the alleged pursuit of Gazzaniga, suggesting that he will never play for the club and isn’t the calibre of signing Spurs need to continue challenging at the top of the Premier League.
