Southall responds on Twitter when asked about Everton’s Pickford

Jordan Pickford joined Everton in the summer from relegated side Sunderland.

Everton icon Neville Southall has responded to a fan on, Twitter stating that the Toffees’ two games unbeaten is a step in the right direction under interim manager David Unsworth.

Former goalkeeper Southall has vehemently backed Unsworth, with whom he shared an Everton dressing room with for much of the 90’s at Goodison Park.

The Toffees drew 2-2 against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon, thanks to a penalty from Leighton Baines and Oumar Niasse’s sixth goal of the season in just nine games.

A fan asked Southall about his thoughts on the form of summer signing Jordan Pickford, who has conceded 34 goals in 19 games. The 59-year-old replied, stating fans “look to criticise” before giving his verdict on Everton’s recent form.

Pickford, 23, was a £30million summer signing from Sunderland last summer, and has since gone on to win an England cap under Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate in the most recent international break against Germany.

He has managed just three clean sheets in 19 games since his move to Merseyside but he will be looking to make that four in all competitions on Thursday night as Everton go up against Serie A outfit Atalanta.

The Toffees have already been knocked out of the Europa League group stage, after three losses in four games, which could see Unsworth rotate his squad in order to keep his first-team stars fresh for Sunday’s outing against Southampton.
