- EXCLUSIVE from Graeme Bailey
HITC understands that Leeds United have an interest in taking Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips back to Elland Road.
The 28-year-old is currently on loan at David Moyes’ West Ham United after moving to the club during the January transfer window.
HITC understands that Manchester City do not expect Kalvin Phillips to remain at West Ham beyond the end of the season.
He has endured a torrid time on-loan thus far and a permanent deal is already off the table.
Phillips became West Ham’s highest-paid player – at Moyes’s behest, but he has also accepted that the move has not gone according to plan.
From getting sent off during the 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest to giving away a penalty during the 4-3 defeat at Newcastle United, he simply can’t catch a break.
And the wages are a huge issue for Man City, who have already informed Phillips and his people that he does not have a long-term future at the club – but he has four years left on his current deal and that sort of contract will not be taken on by anyone else.
Return to Leeds United for Kalvin Phillips?
HITC understands that Phillips’s former club Leeds do have an interest in taking him back to Elland Road – if they are promoted back to the Premier League.
But even then, they would only be able to take him on-loan and a portion of his wages.
When Leeds were last in the Premier League, their academy product, dubbed ‘exceptional’ at the time, secured a transfer to the Etihad in 2022, after guiding them back to the promised land under Marcelo Bielsa.
Even though Phillips won the Treble, he played a small part, as things didn’t go to plan for either party, including Leeds’ relegation last season.

Leeds United under Daniel Farke
As things stand, Leeds are heading back to the promised land under Daniel Farke, who took charge of the club in the summer.
After an early wobble, the Yorkshire side have seriously picked up, and since the turn of the year, have been the best team in the Championship.
But the Whites have a serious fight on their hands to earn automatic promotion.
Only one point separates Leeds in second and Leicester City in third – the Foxes have a game in hand, so expect this pulsating Championship title race to go to the final day of the season.
