Graeme Souness has told TalkSPORT (Monday, 11:50AM) that midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is a “real player” but has questioned those already describing him as a great player, or world class – after his brace for Newcastle on Saturday.

Guimaraes, 24, joined Newcastle in January and has been superb. Costing the club a fee in the region of £38m from Lyon, he has already played 24 times in all competitions. In that time, he has had a hand in nine goals from midfield.

On Saturday, Newcastle secured a second successive win to push them into sixth place in the Premier League table. Brazil international Guimaraes scored twice – the second of which was a delightful finish from the edge of the area.

Souness was asked of his thoughts on Guimaraes, the ex-Newcastle gaffer was full of praise. But says that early tags of a legend, or a world-class player are very early – and also gave his take on Newcastle finishing in the top six.

“What we’ve seen so far, he is a real player. We’re quick to call players world-class players, legends of the game. He’s made a really good start, he will graft, he has athleticism. I like him,” Guimaraes said.

“I’m from a certain vintage, great players are not created in a couple of months – we’ve talked about longevity. Newcastle are doing really well. Top-six, I think that is a wee bit beyond them.”

Souness: Newcastle midfielder Guimaraes a real player

Spanish newspaper AS says Real Madrid want Guimaraes. Little surprise. His early form at Newcastle has been simply sensational. Not only can he play as a goalscoring midfielder, but he can drop deeper and act as a midfield anchor.

A top, top player. Technically incredible, able to score goals, create goals, but also willing to mix it. Guimaraes is willing to put his body on the line and throw himself into a tackle. He has a bit of everything and Newcastle fans love him.

While Souness might be right to some degree to throw some caution around Guimaraes, he is producing world-class performances. He is not a Newcastle legend after just 24 games, but he is most certainly a fan favourite.
