Can Tottenham Hotspur win the Champions League this season?
Tottenham have progressed to the last-16 stage of the Champions League this season.
The North London outfit’s 3-1 victory over defending European champions Real Madrid at Wembley on Wednesday evening suggests that they have what it takes to match any team in the world.
Liverpool legend Souness, who started his career at Spurs but could not break into the first team, believes that Mauricio Pochettino’s side can make an impact in the Champions League, but only if star striker Kane does not suffer any injuries.
“City and Tottenham are the most likely contenders from England, although Tottenham’s chances depend on Harry Kane avoiding injury because they are over-reliant on him,” Souness wrote in The Times.
“Take his goals — 107 over the past three and a bit seasons — out of Tottenham’s total and where do they finish?
“They have a good mixture of homegrown products and young players they have bought who have become very good players under their manager.
“Can you imagine if they had spent the £86m they received for Gareth Bale wisely? The only good one they got from that was Christian Eriksen.”
“If Tottenham really believe in themselves, they could do well in the Champions League,” added Souness.
Winning the Champions League is very hard, especially with the number of ‘super teams’, such as Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.
While it is hard to envisage Spurs conquering Europe, they could progress far into the competition if they get favourable draws.
