Graeme Souness has intimated that some Liverpool players might a little annoyed with team-mate Georginio Wijnaldum, whom he claims is joining Barcelona during the summer.
Wijnaldum is out of contract at Liverpool in a couple of months.
And The Echo reported earlier this week that although the Reds did offer him a new deal, that proposal is now effectively off the table.
It looks very much like the Netherlands international – a £25 million signing in 2016 – is leaving Anfield after five successful years under Jurgen Klopp, which includes one Premier League and Champions League title apiece.
The former Newcastle United midfielder has a played a big role in their success, but his form has waned in recent months and Liverpool legend Souness believes that his decline in performances is linked to the knowledge that he’s more than likely leaving, which the Scot claims should frustrate other players in Klopp’s dressing room.
He told The Times: “Wijnaldum is leaving for Barcelona and I’m not sure how I’d have reacted to a player who made it clear he was off, how that goes down in a dressing-room. The players may make a joke of it, but it also may not sit well with all of them. He’s not played with the same intensity this season.”
