Graeme Souness has championed Newcastle United as the biggest surprise package of the 2022/2023 Premier League season.
The Magpies have shocked the world this season
Heading into the campaign after finishing 9th last term, many expected Newcastle to finish just outside the top six places.
However, Eddie Howe’s troops have outperformed expectations, currently sitting as high as 3rd place in the league table.
For context, the Magpies are only two points behind Manchester City, who amassed an incredible 93 points in the previous campaign.
This summer, Newcastle United’s recruitment was once again unquestionably superb, with the smash-hit signings of Sven Botman and Nick Pope in particular.
But there is no running away from the fact that after 14 games of the league season, not a single soul would have backed this side to be sitting above the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United in the table.

Newcastle have impressed to the extent that many now believe that they are set to guarantee themselves a place in the top six by the end of the season.
While there are several others that even feel that a finish in the Champions League places is not out of the question for Howe’s high-flying bunch.
Souness reserves special praise for Newcastle
On talkSPORT, Graeme Souness explained why Newcastle United have surpassed Arsenal as the Premier League’s biggest surprise package this season.
“I think the Newcastle story just edges it, given Eddie’s [Howe] been there for only a year and what a turnaround. What a turnaround.”
He continued, “Come a long way very, very quickly. The best way I can put into words of how far they’ve come, they’ve gone from a team playing survival football in the past under previous managers…plural, managers to a team that now feels they can take the very best on.”
“I.e., going to Liverpool, going to Spurs. This turnaround is phenomenal for me.”
Graeme Souness’ take is certainly not an unpopular one, as Newcastle’s rise to the top this term has been the stuff of dreams.
