Just when it seemed as though Arsenal’s Dominik Szoboszlai race was run, David Ornstein has delivered the bombshell that he’s heard the Gunners are still in for him.
The Hungarian has long-been linked with a move to north London, and while some outlets are reporting that he’s set to join RB Leipzig, the ever-reliable Ornstein says that Arsenal remain interested.
Unfortunately, he’s also heard murmurs about how Szoboszlai would be used by Arteta if he joined Arsenal, and it’s rather disappointing.
“Very recently I’ve heard that Arsenal are still interested in him, but they do have reservations, which is understandable for a player of his age and stage of development,” Ornstein said on the Ornstein & Champan podcast.
The journalist went on to explain that these reservations mean that Szoboszlai wouldn’t be a guaranteed starter in Arteta’s side if he joined.
“Sorry to Arsenal fans to say this, but as I hear it, if Arsenal are to bring him in he’s not ready to start every single game, he’s not going to be some silver bullet to solve all of their problems if they were to bring him in.”
Could you imagine how infuriating this would be?
Arsenal have struggled for creativity all season, and they may end up bringing in a player who has seven league assists to his name this season only to leave him on the bench.
Szoboszlai is a bargain there waiting to be had with his reported £23 million release clause coming into effect next month, but Arsenal could still end up messing this up.
The Gunners need a player in Szoboszlai’s mould now more than ever, but if Ornstein is right, it’s just going to be more of the same if he does join.
Of course, the Hungarian will have a chance to prove to Arsenal that their reservations are wrong if he does join the club, but the Emirates doesn’t seem like the most appealing of destinations for him after hearing this.
