Trevor Sinclair has praised Bernardo Silva for his on-going Twitter row with Liverpool fans by stating that he likes to see players with a bit of ‘personality’ about them, as he told talkSPORT (19/08/20 at 11:10 am).
The former winger did admit that Silva was a ‘sore loser’ when he didn’t acknowledge the Liverpool players in a respective manner when Manchester City gave the Premier League champions a guard of honour during this past season.
It’s something that the Liverpool fans very much noticed at the time and remembered. And then, when City were knocked out of the Champions League, Silva hit back at the Anfield faithful on Twitter for the stick he was getting from Merseyside.
All of this was a topic discussed in the talkSPORT studio, as Sinclair first spoke about Silva’s actions during the guard of honour and then his recent messages on social media.
“He had a cup of tea [in his hand], so he couldn’t clap the Liverpool players out,” Sinclair told talkSPORT. “Then almost probably three or four [Liverpool] players still walking onto the pitch and you could see it in his [Silva’s] body language, he had enough and started walking towards the halfway line – I thought that was touch and go. Show them the respect, they have earned the right.
“I think he was being petulant. Almost a sore loser because they had taken the Championship from Manchester City. But then, he started getting some grief off some Liverpool fans off the back of that and he’s replied. I think it’s good banter, isn’t it?! They have given him a little bit. He has given them a little bit back. Of course, he has got a quite bigger profile and it’s gone quite big.
“I like to see players with personality backing themselves. I think in my era of football, it was a lot more accepted and a lot more players had a bit more about them where they felt they could respond to fans if they were giving them grief. For me, I like to see it. A bit about themselves and not be shrinking violets if someone comes at them, especially if they are unfounded.
“The wittiness of his replies. I think he has killed them off. He does leave a bit on them by saying ‘maybe a book was too much’. It shows to me why he gets on with Mendy.”

The banter between two sets of fans is fine, but it seems as though this is more than just ‘banter’ and has a serious element to it.
Silva didn’t help himself when he didn’t show Liverpool the respect they earnt during the guard of honour, in fact, nor did the Manchester City team.
Therefore, it is understandable why the Liverpool fans are angry and have been eating away at Silva to the point that he had no choice but to bite back at them.
