Sophie Cunningham tried to explain how the Indiana Fever were fixing their early problems, but Jason Whitlock turned it into a warning about what should stay private.

The Fever entered this week at 4-4 after back-to-back losses, and Cunningham told reporters the team held a long meeting to address what had gone wrong.

That was useful context for fans. It also gave critics an opening, because the Fever’s messy start has made every public comment feel heavier.

Sophie Cunningham locker room reveal sparks Jason Whitlock backlash

In an Instagram clip, Whitlock gave Cunningham a harsh reality check after she discussed the Fever’s private meeting and their need to reset.

“She’s the hottest woman in sports but she’s out of control,” Whitlock said. “She talks too much. She’s building her brand constantly. … The problem here is that Sophie Cunningham doing too much. Some things do need to be left in the locker room and a mystery. Sophie Cunningham is clout chasing. She’s doing too much content over everything.”

His point was aggressive, but the core criticism was simple. Whitlock believes Cunningham is turning too much internal Fever business into public content while her profile keeps rising.

Cunningham had said the Fever “peeled back all of the layers” in a meeting that began with the coaches and became more player-led. She framed it as a needed reset, not a leak.

Indiana Fever defensive issues made Cunningham’s comments louder

The basketball context matters more than the noise. Cunningham said Indiana was leaning on only one defensive scheme because the team had not executed enough alternatives.

That is a real problem for a team with title expectations. The Fever had just allowed 92 points in the paint across losses to the Golden State Valkyries and Portland Fire.

Cunningham also pointed to execution and focus, which is fair. Indiana has young talent, but talent does not cover up poor defensive discipline for long.

Cunningham’s Fever role keeps growing on and off court

Cunningham’s visibility is part of why this hit. Spotrac lists her on a one-year, $665,000 deal.

She also has a podcast and a major social following, so Whitlock’s “brand” criticism was aimed at something fans can already see.

Still, the Fever’s real issue is not that Cunningham talked. It is that Indiana has to make the meeting matter when Atlanta comes to town Thursday.
