The son of a former Tottenham Hotspur defender has announced he’s signed his first professional contract at the club.

Maxwell Statham, whose father Brian played for Tottenham between 1987 and 1992, revealed the news on Twitter earlier on Tuesday.

“Delighted to have signed my first professional contract with @SpursOfficial,” he wrote. “(L)ooking forward to next season! #COYS”

Statham, a centre-back, was linked with moves to Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Sunderland in March of this year and was said to have trialled with the newly-promoted Canaries (The Mirror).

At that stage, it was claimed he had yet to be offered a new deal by Tottenham.

But the Champions League finalists have now moved to ensure that any club wishing to sign Statham, who is not 19 until September, will first have to agree a fee with them.

After Tottenham, Statham Snr went on to play for Brentford and Gillingham before dropping into non-league football.
