Tottenham Hotspur winger Son Heung-min is back from his commitments with South Korea – and could be in line to feature against Liverpool this weekend.
Son, 26, played against Newcastle United as a substitute on the opening day of the season, and then went off to the Asian Games with South Korea in pursuit of a gold medal.
The forward helped his country win the tournament, meaning he has received exemption from mandatory military service in South Korea and won’t have to leave Spurs for two years within the next 18 months.
Spurs have only lost one league game without Son, but after smashing 12 goals and six assists in the Premier League last season, his return to England is a welcome one for Mauricio Pochettino and co.
The big debate has been over Son’s fitness ahead of the upcoming game against Liverpool, as the attacker has barely had a rest for over a year now, with some troubling numbers in play.
Son played 53 games in all competitions for Spurs last season, then went straight into playing every minute for South Korea at the World Cup, started the season with Spurs, then played five games in 12 days at the Asian Games and missed just seven minutes of his country’s two friendlies over the last week.
Many feel that Son is far too tired to be in contention for this weekend’s game against Liverpool, but the man himself has offered a rousing comment about that situation.
As quoted by FOX Sports, Son offered just four words on concerns about his fitness, simply saying; ‘Fatigue is an excuse’ – and whilst fans will be concerned about him burning out, others will be stunned by his determination and desire with such a big game coming up.
