Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after the Premier League announced that Craig Pawson would oversee the clash with Manchester United.

What’s the story?

Well, the Newcastle fans are devastated by this news, and in fairness, they have reason to be.

Pawson was in charge of VAR for Newcastle’s 4-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, where he made a quite bizarre decision.

The 42-year-old watched Ederson come flying off his line to clatter into Ryan Fraser inside the box, and decided he saw nothing wrong.

It was a stonewall penalty, and we simply couldn’t believe Pawson failed to at least tell Martin Atkinson to have another look at the incident.

Now, the Premier League have enraged the Toon Army by putting Pawson in the spotlight for Monday’s meeting with the Red Devils.

It was also Pawson who failed to spot the fact James Maddison dived to win a penalty in the recent 4-0 defeat to Leicester, while working on VAR duty.

Newcastle could struggle against Manchester United

In our view, Newcastle could struggle with Pawson overseeing things at St James’ Park.

The Magpies have a woeful record under the 42-year-old, winning just eight of their 24 games refereed by Pawson.

Newcastle have drawn six and lost the remaining ten, while also picking up 42 yellow cards in those 24 outings.

Pawson has also shown the Magpies four red cards.

Evidently, Eddie Howe may find things very tough when Ralf Rangnick comes to visit on Monday 27th December.

For now, let’s see what the Newcastle fans on Twitter have been saying about the Premier League announcement…
