Stephen Warnock has shared that it is ‘important’ for Newcastle United to bring in ‘someone of the statute’ of Dan Ashworth amid rumours, as he told the Football Show on Sky Sports.
Newcastle United, heading into the January transfer window, are starting to make noises in the background and putting people into place in key roles.
One area that has constantly been talked about is who will be the director of football or sporting director for the long-term?
Well, that man may well be Ashworth, according to The Athletic, as he is currently sitting in the boardroom of Brighton and Hove Albion.
The 50-year-old has the experience of having worked for England, at West Brom and now earning his stripes at the Amex Stadium.
When it was put to former England international Warnock that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) are looking to bring in Ashworth, he issued this simple response:
“I think it’s one of the most important things to do is to get someone in of that stature,” said Warnock.
“He understands what the remit is of the job.”
This is probably the most important role, along with the manager, Newcastle are going to make under their new Saudi-led ownership.
At this moment in time, it has been a very rocky road for all involved and relegation is staring them right in the face.
But they still have time to turn their ship around and the winter transfer window might just prove to be key.
The Magpies will feel, with their big pockets, they have an advantage over the teams in and around, and it’s one of their biggest tools to get out of their current mess.
