West Ham United fans have sent positive thoughts to Jesse Lingard on Twitter after his horror mistake for Manchester United in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

In stoppage-time, the one-time West Ham loanee’s backpass resulted in Young Boys scoring a last-gasp winner, as ten-man Man United suffered a 2-1 defeat in their opening European game of the new season.

What makes matters worse for Lingard is that he had come on a second-half substitute for Cristiano Ronaldo.

It was a tough one to take for the England international because he knows how costly it is.

Whilst it took 24 hours for Lingard to process what he had done, he sent this following Twitter message to Man United fans where he spoke about the ‘hurt’ of what happened.

West Ham fans made it clear to Lingard that he is welcome back at the London Stadium any time and he has their full support.

Understandably so, supporters will be angry towards the goalscoring midfielder because of his actions.

But those in Claret and Blue were backing their former player, who still holds a special place in their heart.

It was Lingard’s arrival last January that not only put his talents back on the map, but also played a huge part in David Moyes’ side securing Europa League football.

There’s no doubt that Lingard will be watching on from afar today because the Hammers take Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia.

But, as the West Ham fans know too well, Lingard has bounced back from more difficult moments and they are sure he can bounce back from this.

Perhaps not at the weekend, though, because Man United travel to East London for a mouthwatering clash where a number of individuals will face-off against their former club.

Nonetheless, here is a selection of West Ham fans reacting to Lingard’s tweet:
