Mauricio Pochettino suggested Tottenham Hotspur have made five ‘new signings’ this summer in the form of contract extensions.

Some Tottenham Hotspur fans aren’t happy with Mauricio Pochettino’s latest comments.

The summer transfer window closes on August 9 and Tottenham are yet to sign a single player.

Speculation is rife, as it always is, but Spurs are struggling to add to their ranks, despite increasing frustration from the fanbase.

Pochettino addressed the topic in a press conference on Tuesday and promised “some movement”.

However, the Argentine manager, who is yet to win a trophy with Spurs, also added to The Evening Standard: “And of course, very happy with players who have signed new contracts like Harry Kane, Son, Lamela, Davinson and Michel Vorm – that’s like signing five new players.”

Comparing players who extended their contracts, or fit-again players after a lengthy absence, to ‘new signings’ is a bit of a faux pas in football management – and some Tottenham fans aren’t happy with the comparison at all.

There was indeed a touch of the Arsene Wengers about Pochettino’s suggestion and fans of the North London club have every right to be annoyed.

The Lilywhites left it late to do their business last summer, signing five players in the final two weeks of August, but the transfer window closes earlier this time around so the clock is ticking – and fast.

For all the talk by Pochettino of Spurs getting their transfer business done early, this is a huge disappointment.
