Gus Poyet was sacked by Sunderland two-and-a-half years ago but would he come back to the Stadium of Light?
The two-and-a-half years since Gus Poyet was sacked must feel like a lifetime to Sunderland supporters.
The Black Cats are looking for their fifth permanent manager since the Uruguayan was handed his p45 in March 2015 and currently find themselves rock bottom of the Championship.
Poyet’s reign resembles bonafide ‘glory days’ by comparison. It was he who led Sunderland to the 2014 League Cup final after all, where they were unfortunate to be beaten by three truly wonderful Manchester City goals after taking a lead through Fabio Borini.
And, after winning 13 points from a possible 15 at the end of that season, Sunderland pulled of one of the most remarkable acts of escapology since Houdini was entertaining the masses.
These days, however, Poyet’s reputation as an exciting up-and-coming manager lies in tatters. While Sunderland have struggled badly since the former Chelsea and Spurs favourite departed, he too has endured a difficult spell.
He’s been sacked by AEK Athens and Real Betis and most recently resigned from his post at Chinese giants Shanghai Shenhua after taking the side from third to twelfth in just ten months.
Nonetheless, Sunderland fans would welcome Poyet back with open arms on Wearside as the club continue to scramble around for a successor to the recently departed Simon Grayson.
